Martenet's map of 1861 shows the "Jos. H. Selby" residence in what was then Nottingham District No. 4. The residence and property are on the north side of a smaller branch of the Mattaponi Branch off the Patuxent River in what is now called Cheltenham, Maryland.

  • "Jos. H. Selby, son of Jesse Selby & Ann, his wife was born in the year of our Lord 1807, Aug 15th." [FB]
  • "Rebecca Selby, daughter to Henry Howse and Sarah his wife was born in the year A.D. 1807, July 25th." [FB]
  • Married April 7, 1832 in PG. [Maryland Marriages]
  • In the 1840 census Jos H Selby is listed on the same page of District 4 (Nottingham) as his father Jesse. Joseph and his wife are both 30-40 years old. They have one son under 5 (Richard), one daughter under 5 (Ann), and one daughter between 5-10 (Mary). They have no free blacks.
  • In 1845 Joseph inherited $500 from his father. [PG WB PC.282; MSA CR34.682]
  • The 1850 Federal Census for the Nottingham District showed Henry (42) was a planter and Rebecca (42) was keeping house with Mary (17), Richard (13), Ann (11), William (9), Joseph (8) , Edwin (6), and Catherine (3) at home.
  • In December 1854 William H. Turton, Trustee, sold to Joseph H. Selby "223 acres and 26 perches less one now for Boones Church at and for the sum of nine dollars and fifty cents per acre." The P.G. County Court sitting in Equity substituted Joseph H. Selby for the previous purchaser, John L. Waring, with Joseph having paid the above sum plus $500 in hand. [PG LR EWB1.23]
  • In November 1857 Joseph H. Selby received title from John B. Brooke, Trustee, for land "now called Selby's Purchase being a part of Boone's Chance beginning for the outlines of said parcel of land at a large white oak stump, it being the remains of a bonded oak tree said to stand in the West South West line of a tract of land called Brooke-Wood and the beginning of a parcel of land called Boone's Folly and running from thence south 57° 45' east 13 4/5 perches to a Cedar Stake standing on the Main road leading from the Roman Chapel towards Upper Marlboro... 41 7/8 acres". The P.G. County Court sitting in Equity approved the purchase in November 1854. [PG LR CSM2.81]
  • The 1860 Federal Census for Nottingham in the 4th Election District showed that J. H. Selby (53) was a planter and wife Rebecca (53) was keeping house with five children at home: Mary (27), Ann (22), Joseph (19), Edwin (16), and CRL (13, Catharine). Joseph and Edwin were occupied as farmhands, but Richard (25) and William (20) were not listed in the family household. Richard, along with his young wife and three children, appear to be living on adjacent property. William Selby does appear in D.C. at a boarding house, working as a laborer.
  • Joseph Selby served in Company B, 21 Regiment Virginia Infantry (Confederate) as a Second Lieutenant. He enlisted May 23, 1861 at Richmond, the same day as his brother James. In February 1862 he was at Winchester, in March 1862 he was at the Army (?) of Valley, then he "mustered out of service 23 May 1862 at Front Royal Va." [Fold3.com]
