Martha Emma Selby graduated from Western Maryland College and was prepared to be a teacher, but died just before her 20th birthday. She is buried at Immanuel Methodist Church. Emma's 1877 charcoal drawing of "Westwood" survives.

  • In 1845 Jesse inherited an equal portion of his father's estate real and personal. [PG WB PC:282; MSA CR34,682]
  • Jesse F. Selby married Christianna F. Swan February 14, 1859 in PG. [Maryland Marriages]
  • The 1860 census shows Jesse (25) lived with his widowed mother on a farm in Brandywine in the 4th District.
  • The 1863 Schedule 1 "LIST of all persons of CLASS I, subject to do military duty" included Jesse F. Selby, 31, a married white farmer born in Maryland and living in the Fourth District of Prince George's County. [Civil War Draft Registration Records, 1863-1865, Ancestry.com]
  • The 1870 Federal Census for Nottingham in the Nottingham District lists Jesse (35) as a farmer with a wife, Christiana (34) and five children at home: Martha (10), Joseph W. (7), Ida (6), Elizabeth (4), and Eva (3 months).
  • April 19, 1871 a funeral was held at St. Paul's Church for Noble Richards, Mary Susanna, and Effa (Eva?), children of Jesse and Christiana Selby. [MSA Special Collections, M1350 B2.156]
  • By the 1880 Federal Census in the Nottingham District there were six children at home. Jesse F. (44) continues to farm with his wife Christianna (43) keeping house. James W. (17) was a farm laborer; Martha E. (19), Ida M. (16), Elizabeth F. (14), and Julia V (7) were at school; and Jesse F. Jr. (5) was at home. 
  • "On Tuesday, January 2, 1900, Mrs. Christiana F. Selby, wife of the late Jesse F. Selby [died] at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Ida M. Hopkins, 925 North Carolina Avenue Southeast [Washington, DC]. Funeral service Thursday at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends invited. Interment at Congressional Cemetery." [From CongressionalCemetery.org]
  • Son Jessie Frederick Selby died November 11, 1917 at age 38, and is buried at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC. [From Congressional Cemetery.org]
