  • In 1845 John inherited an equal portion of his father's estate real and personal. [PG WB PC:282; MSA CR34,682]
  • The 1863 Schedule 1 "LIST of all persons of CLASS I, subject to do military duty" included John Selby, 25, a single white farmer born in Maryland and living in the Fourth District of Prince George's County. [Civil War Draft Registration Records, 1863-1865,]
  • Pvt. John Selby served in Company I of the Maryland Infantry (Confederate). He enlisted June 15, 1861 at Richmond (three weeks after brothers Joseph and James), but was absent sick at Front Royal October 8, 1861 through December. John was admitted to General Hospital No. 21 at Richmond on March 12, 1862 with diarrhea and returned to duty April 12, 1862. He was admitted to the same hospital April 21, 1862 with dysentary and returned to duty May 6, 1862. He was admitted to CSA General Hospital at Charlottesville May 25, 1862 with "debilitas" and returned to duty June 18, 1862. []

  • August 14, 1869 a funeral was held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Baden for Katey May (cetas 18 months). [MSA Special Collections, M1350]
  • In the 1880 Federal Census for Washington, DC John (38) was listed as a laborer. His wife Dorcella (40) was keeping house with five children at home: Martha J. (14), Rosa E. (9), John E. (8), Inez (3), and Dorcella (10 months).
  • John M. Selby died on Sunday, January 29, 1899. The funeral was from his late residence, 435 Seventh Street SE, Washington, DC, with interment at Congressional Cemetery. [From]
