• Maryland was one of five slave states that remained in the Union.
• In the Civil War (1861 to 1865) 180 Selby men served as Union soldiers and 81 served as Confederate soldiers.
• In the 1880 Census Maryland had 95 Selby households, more than any other state. Ohio was second with 82 Selby families.
• By the 1900 Census there were 1,157 Selby families in the U.S.
